TYY Library has moved back to its old and renovated premises in the 2nd floor of the Student House B (Rehtoripellonkatu 4 B, 2nd floor).

Due to the on-going renovation in the Student House B, entrance to the library is through Student House A’s 3rd floor corridor, at the end of which there are stairs to the 2nd floor of Student House B.

The library is open as follows: Mon 14-18, Tue to Fri 10-14.30. On the eve of religious holidays, the library will be closed at 12.

Keijo Virtanen awarded as TYY’s honorary member

The Student Union of the University of Turku (TYY) celebrated with traditional festivities its anniversary on 9 November, Porthan’s day.

The celebration of the 90th Porthan's day began with the students’ flag procession from the Student Houses to the statue of Porthan. Jukka Koivisto, the Chair of the Executive Board of the Student Union, laid TYY’s memorial wreath at the statue.

Successful launch of the FSHS's new electronic laboratory appointments
booking system

The electronic laboratory appointments booking system, introduced in
the Helsinki and Turku FSHS units in September, has gained a large
number of users. In Helsinki, for instance, more than 50 bookings have
been made each day. Before the introduction of the electronic
laboratory appointments booking system, students booked their
appointments by phone, which made it difficult to get through to the

TYYs 90th Anniversary

The Student Union of the University of Turku will celebrate its 90 years in operation on Saturday, 10th November 2012. Cocktail event and reception of greetings will be organised at 16.30 in the lobby of the main building of the University of Turku. The main celebration at VPK house starts at 19.00.

THE COURSE OF THE YEAR 2012

Have you attended an inspiring course or an excellent series of lectures in your faculty or department this year? Now you can nominate that course for the Course of the Year 2012!

Because of the renovation of the Student house B, the TYY library is moving to a temporary location and is closed from April 24th to May 1st. After this, the library is situated in the center of the studentvillage, in Inspehtorinkatu 4 B, 20540 Turku.

The TYY Student Union Council has decided, in a meeting on 29 Feb 2012, with votes 28–12 to balance the political agenda and the budget by adding to the agenda the item removed by the previous Council, according to which 0,7 % of the budget of TYY will be directed to development cooperation. In addition, a mention will be added to the agenda that TYY is trying to make an influence also outside its members for global responsibility with its 0,7 alignment.

Solution sought to the problematic apartment situation of the international exchange students at the University of Turku
 
The Student Village Foundation of Turku cannot offer apartments for all international exchange students from autumn 2012. The problem does not only concern the current year, but it will recur in the following years and it also concerns the other higher education institutions in Turku. As for the University of Turku, the problem concerns yearly approximately 100–150 students.

Apply to become a member of a TYY Committee for 2012

The application process for TYY Committees starts on 14 November 2011. Electronic application form is available from www.tyy.fi/valiokuntahaku and will close on 28 November 2011 at 12.00 noon.

There are seven TYY Committees which act as a link between the Student Union and its members. All of the Committees have elected members but their meetings and events are open to everybody.

Problems have been noticed with the absentee online voting of the Student Union Council elections due to which some of the member seligible to vote haven't been able to vote in advance. This concerns those students who are registered with the University as present only during the fall semester 2011. The problem will be solved by the time of the official election days (1-2 November), but unfortunately not during the absentee voting days 24-25 October.

UPCOMING STUDENT UNION COUNCIL ELECTIONS

The Student Union of the University of Turku will hold an election for the Student Union Council on 1–2 November 2011. In the elections for the Student Union Council elections, 41 representatives will be chosen to the Council of the Student Union of the University of Turku. The Student Union Council will start its 2-year term in January 2012. The Council is the highest decision-making organ in the Student Union of the University of Turku.

Turku Art Museum is taking part in the event Off to the Museum We Go! by offering all students free admission on Friday, 8 October when the museum will be open from 11.00 to 19.00.

University Sports´summer 2010 schedule is valid 3 May -18 June, 2010. After this there will be a summer break until 30 August, when the autumn schedule starts.

The gym is open until 18 June and also 2 - 27 August on Mon-Thu 7.30-21.00 and Fri 7.30-15.00, weekends are closed.

Summer sports fee is 15 e, payment instructions are at University Sports´ web page (fees) and printed schedules. Please notice the new bank account and reference number!

Thursday, 8 April and Friday 9, April. “Development Lunch” in all Unica restaurants:
You can support the development project of TYY in Mexico by eating a vegetarian lunch in any Unica restaurant!

Tuesday 13, April. Movie night in Educarium 1 at 6 pm, free entry!
“Perfume de Violetas” is a story about two girls living in Mexico City, their friendship and indifference of adults. The movie is in Spanish, and without subtitles.

The Government of Finland will determine significant policies concerning development cooperation funds when discussing the framework of national economy for the years 2011-2014 on 23 March 2010. HYY and TYY are concerned about loosening the criteria for Finnish development aid and particularly about including student expenses in the official development aid of Finland. 

The recent debate on free education has not, in TYY’s opinion, proceeded favourably. There have been serious proposals presented on implementing tuition fees for all students studying in Finland, including Finns. TYY is absolutely opposed to tuition fees in all its forms. TYY’s position is also clearly shown in the Student Union political agenda: “Education leading to a degree must be free-of-charge to students.”

Equality and equality-based free education are values that cannot be questioned and, in a civilized welfare state, cannot be crushed.

ESN Language Exchange Buddies!

Everyone knows that learning a language from books will only teach you half of what you need to know. The real way to get better is to practice, practice and practice! And since a book is so boring to talk to, here's an alternative - a language buddy!

The Student Union Council of TYY has selected a new member for the Executive Board in its meeting on 24 February.

TYY Executive Board Vice Chair and responsible for academic affairs Jarmo Kallunki will be the next SYL Educational Officer, starting from 1 March. Subsequently he has asked the Student Union Council to grant him resignation from the TYY Executive Board. The resignation was granted in the Student Union Council meeting 24 February.

We are two ex-volunteers starting an EVS (European Voluntary Service) group in Turku for ex-volunteers, present volunteers and persons who at the moment are looking for an EVS project. Join us and share your experience - we will develop our activities together!

The Chair of the Board of TYY Jukka Vornanen has been elected as a member of the Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL).

The annual Congress was held on 20-21 November at Korpilampi in Espoo. Matti Parpala from The Student Union of Helsinki School of Economics (KY) was elected as the Chair of SYL. Other elected members of the Board are Ville Impiö (OYY), Hannu Jaakkola (KYY), Laura Keski-Hakuni (HYY), Juha Töyrylä (HYY) and Anni Vesa (LYY).

LANGUAGE STRATEGY PROPOSAL

The Student Union and the University of Turku are looking for propositions for the Teacher of the Year 2009. Two students at minimum can propose a teacher worth awarding. In addition, the employees of faculties and institutes, as well as subject-oriented departmental and faculty organisations can make these propositions. The winner is chosen by the Rector of the University of Turku and the Chairperson of the Executive Board of the Student Union.
