  • Changes to VR student discounts 31.05.2013

    Press release 30 May 2013

    On 30 May the state-owned railway company VR and the Finnish student
    organisations have agreed on contract changes regarding student ticket
    prices and marketing cooperation. The changes will come into effect on 3
    June 2013.

    The changes were initiated by VR as a part of the company's comprehensive
    train ticket pricing reform, which aims to adjust ticket prices towards a
    more demand-based pricing system. Beginning on June 3 the student discount

  • TYY Library has changed location 23.01.2013

    TYY Library has moved back to its old and renovated premises in the 2nd floor of the Student House B (Rehtoripellonkatu 4 B, 2nd floor).

    Due to the on-going renovation in the Student House B, entrance to the library is through Student House A’s 3rd floor corridor, at the end of which there are stairs to the 2nd floor of Student House B.

    The library is open as follows: Mon 14-18, Tue to Fri 10-14.30. On the eve of religious holidays, the library will be closed at 12.

    The Student Union of the University of Turku has seven Committees: on Cultural Issues, on Development Cooperation, on Environmental Issues, on International Affairs, on Student Affairs, on Sub-Organisations, and TYY Student Cafeteria Committee. Committees act as a link between the members, the Student Union Council, the Executive Board and the TYY employees.

    The Student Union Council elects a Chair and 6–10 other members to each Committee for a calendar year at a time.

    The Student Union of the University of Turku (TYY) celebrated with traditional festivities its anniversary on 9 November, Porthan’s day.

    The celebration of the 90th Porthan's day began with the students’ flag procession from the Student Houses to the statue of Porthan. Jukka Koivisto, the Chair of the Executive Board of the Student Union, laid TYY’s memorial wreath at the statue.

  • Printing quotas for students from 1 Sep 2012 11.09.2012

    Starting from 1 Sep, there will be quotas for printing in the University computer labs.
    The aim is to decrease paper consumption.

    The printing quota for students is 300 black-and-white pages per term. Colour printing means 10 pages from the quota per one printed page. The quota is personal and includes printing in all University computer labs. Copying at the library service desks is included in the same quota.

    Problems in FSHS invoicing system

    Over the past year, there have been problems in the FSHS invoicing
    system that the system provider has not been able to fix despite its
    efforts.

    Therefore invoicing to our customers had to be discontinued for the
    duration of our summer break and some of the invoices for appointments
    that took place in May and June have still not been sent out.

    THE FSHS APPOINTMENT FEES WILL CHANGE AS OF 1 SEPTEMBER 2012

    As of the beginning of September, all appointments at the FSHS general

    specialists, physiotherapists and groups, will be free of charge for
    students. The services of oral hygienists will also be free of charge.

    As of the beginning of September, all appointments at the FSHS general health and mental health services, including appointments with specialists, physiotherapists and groups, will be free of charge for students. The services of oral hygienists will also be free of charge. He beat his rival candidate, Economics student Juho Harmaa, with 23 votes against 18. The party of Natural Sciences, Hybridiaani, proposed Koivisto for the chairmanship, while Harmaa was suggested by the party of Economics students TuKY.

    At week 39 starts a new exercise group for students, who would like to start moving more and try new sports, but haven't had the company before. The group is lead by a sports tutor. The groups meet every 1-2 weeks and the groups can decide for themselves, what they would like to do. The activities are mostly organized free of charge. Come and find the joy of excercising!

Unlike school and workplace bullying, bullying in higher education is not yet generally recognised and there are no tools to intervene in it. Now is the time to notice the prevalence of bullying in higher education and create measures to intervene in it.

    University Sports´summer 2010 schedule is valid 3 May -18 June, 2010. After this there will be a summer break until 30 August, when the autumn schedule starts.

    The gym is open until 18 June and also 2 - 27 August on Mon-Thu 7.30-21.00 and Fri 7.30-15.00, weekends are closed.

    The National Union of Finnish University Students (SYL) and the Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (SAMOK) will be holding a demonstration together for free education in Helsinki 21 April starting at 12.00.

    Students from all around Finland will take part in this demonstration. TYY and the Student Union of Åbo Academi University want to help ensure free education and also give students in Turku the opportunity to participate in the demonstration held in Helsinki. TYY and ÅAS will provide their members with bus service to Helsinki.

  • TYY wants to safeguard free education 09.03.2010

    The recent debate on free education has not, in TYY’s opinion, proceeded favourably. There have been serious proposals presented on implementing tuition fees for all students studying in Finland, including Finns. TYY is absolutely opposed to tuition fees in all its forms. TYY’s position is also clearly shown in the Student Union political agenda: “Education leading to a degree must be free-of-charge to students.”

    Equality and equality-based free education are values that cannot be questioned and, in a civilized welfare state, cannot be crushed.

    International Office of the University of Turku will move this week to the Faculty building of the Turku School of Economics, 1 st floor, (Rehtorinpellonkatu 3, Campus Map K1(H5).

    This means that on Monday, February 8 on also International Advisors (who used to sit in the Student Services) will move there. PLEASE NOTICE THAT ALL THE SERVICES FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS WILL BE MOVED!

    ELIAS LAITINEN TYY EXECUTIVE BOARD CHAIR

  • Elias Laitinen elected as the Chair of Board of TYY 09.12.2009

    Elias Laitinen (Green Left) was elected as the Chair of Board of TYY for the year 2010.

    Other members of the Board are Rauli Elenius (Green List), Jarmo Kallunki (Hybridiaani), Hannele Karilainen (Eduxi), Lauri Lahoniitty (Torchbearers), Ilkka Marja-aho (TuKY) ja Joel Uusi-Oukari (Lex). The Board was elected at the Student Union Council meeting on 9 December.
     

  • FSHS: Immunization against pandemic H1N1 2009 -virus 03.12.2009

    FSHS start to give vaccinations against the swine influenza virus for healthy students under 25 years of age. Students can have the vaccination without appointment.

  • Vornanen elected as a member of the Board of SYL 2010 26.11.2009

    The Chair of the Board of TYY Jukka Vornanen has been elected as a member of the Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL).

    The annual Congress was held on 20-21 November at Korpilampi in Espoo. Matti Parpala from The Student Union of Helsinki School of Economics (KY) was elected as the Chair of SYL. Other elected members of the Board are Ville Impiö (OYY), Hannu Jaakkola (KYY), Laura Keski-Hakuni (HYY), Juha Töyrylä (HYY) and Anni Vesa (LYY).

    The Student Union and the University of Turku are looking for propositions for the Teacher of the Year 2009. Two students at minimum can propose a teacher worth awarding. The winner is chosen by the Rector of the University of Turku and the Chairperson of the Executive Board of the Student Union.

    Student members are needed for the board and collegiate in accordance with the new Universities Act. The search for student members is being opened up this and next week. Students have a tripartite-based responsibility and obligation to participate in the decision-making activities of the university bodies. The Student Union hopes to have as many students as possible to be encouraged and apply for these positions during April and May.

     The Student Union Council elected new Executive Board for TYY at its meeting on Wed 10 December.

    The Chair of the new Board is Jukka Vornanen, 23 years old cultural history major.

     The TYY crew will start its Christmas holiday on Friday, 19 December.

  • Three Candidates for TYY Executive Board Chair 03.12.2008

    The game has begun for the formation of the TYY Executive Board for 2009. Student Union Council groups interviewed candidates at the TYY Sauna on Monday, 1 December.

    There are three candidates for Executive Board Chair: Marjaana Hoikkala of Keskustaopiskelijat (students of the Centre Party), Maija Niskala of Kokoomusopiskelijat (students of the Coalition Party) and Jukka Vornanen of Soihdunkantajat (Torchbearers of Contemporary History and Political Science).

  • Finland cannot afford the tuition fees! 28.11.2008

    During the national Day of Free Education 28.11. the students of the universities in Turku would like to make it known that only an education system that is free to everyone will guarantee equal possibilities for education and benefit the society in a best way possible. The Student Unions of Turku University, Åbo Akademi and The School of Economics oppose the experiment that could be part of the new law for universities. The law would allow tuition fees for students outside EU and EFTA countries.
