Furthermore, under the guidance of the secretariat, the Executive Board went through the duties of each operative sector of TYY.

TYY SUPPORTS EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS IN HAITI

TYY has committed itself to uphold and support the goals of the United Nations Millennium Declaration in all its activities. The Millennium Declaration is a political commitment, which focuses on inequality and development problems in the world. According to the UN’s calculations, we can achieve the development objectives of the Millennium Declaration by increasing development aid by 0.7 per cent of the gross domestic product in every country. TYY will direct 0.7 per cent of the 2010 budget to development cooperation.

The destructive earthquake in Haiti on 12 January 2010 devastatingly levelled its capital city of Port-au-Prince. The International Red Cross estimates that about a third of 10 million Haitians are in a dire need of help. The relief work in Haiti is the largest International and Finnish Red Cross relief operation after the tsunami of 2004.

The TYY Executive Board decided at its meeting on 21 Jan 2010 to give €500 from its 0.7 per cent funds to the Finnish Red Cross disaster fund for earthquake victims in Haiti.

TAKE PART IN PLANNING MEXICO WEEK

TYY will be organising Mexico Week this spring which aims at raising student awareness about the situation of the indigenous peoples in Mexico and TYY’s AJAGI development cooperation project. Plans for the week will be made on 11 February at 14.00 in Turku-sali (Rehtorinpellonkatu 4 A, 2nd floor).

SHROVE TUESDAY – LASKIAINEN 16 FEB

TYY and other student unions of Turku organise a joint big Shrove Tuesday -event, Fastlaskiainen, on the Vartiovuori hill on Tuesday, 16th of February from 2-5 pm. Welcome to slide the hill or just enjoy the atmosphere and watch the sliding teams, this is as close to a spring carnival as it gets this time of the year! There is a sliding competition and some Shrovetide buns and hot juice sponsored by Lyyra for the 350 people.

If you want to participate in the sliding competition, gather a group of four people, come up with a sledge of some kind, invent a name for your team and register it to tyy-kulttuuri@utu.fi by Friday the 12th of February. The teams often have a certain theme, dress funny and decorate their sledges or sometimes even build it themselves. The winning team gets prizes, fame and fortune!

You will have a great time, even if there is no snow, so, just come, dress warm and enjoy!
Contact tyy-kulttuuri@utu.fi for further questions.
