Akseli Tiitta, Chairperson of the executive board of the Student Union of the University of Turku, was elected as the Chairperson of the Finnish Student Unions' National Union (SYL) for the year 2024.
SYL's Chairperson and Board were elected at the General Assembly held in Tampere on 17th November 2023. Akseli Tiitta won against his opponent Jenni Suutari with a voting count of 79 against 68.
Akseli Tiitta is a 23-year-old student of economics and information technology at the University of Turku. He has served as the Chairperson of TYY's executive board this year and as the vice chairperson in 2022. Tiitta applied for the position of SYL's Chairperson as a politically unaffiliated candidate, proposed by his own student union TYY.
It is important to Tiitta that during his tenure, the entire student movement aligns and remains hopeful about the future.
- The events occurring next year are a small part of the continuum where SYL's core mission is to ensure intergenerational fairness and sustainable development of the higher education system, Tiitta remarks.
During his tenure, Tiitta intends to focus on SYL's strategic process. According to Tiitta, the strategic process should be transparent, with the core focus being internal development. Tiitta has experience with several strategic processes.
