Statement: TYY Demands Action to Resolve the Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza and Support for Students

The escalation of the conflict between Hamas and Israel has led to a deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza over the past year. The situation is catastrophic for civilians, including students in the region. For this reason, TYY calls on the political leaders of Finland and the EU to take immediate action to achieve a  ceasefire, secure the release of hostages, protect civilians, and ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need. In addition, TYY opposes university-level cooperation with Israel.

TYY emphasizes the importance of respecting human rights and international humanitarian law, as well as the need for immediate peace negotiations. We strongly condemn Hamas's terrorist attacks against Israel, which have resulted in over 1,100 casualties, and demand the immediate release of all hostages. Similarly, we strongly condemn Israel's military actions that have led to over 40,000 casualties, resulting in a continuous shortage of food, water, medicine, and electricity in Gaza. Over a third of those killed in Gaza have been children.

TYY highlights the protection of civilians and the safeguarding of education and universities amidst war to preserve academic freedom and students' right to education. Furthermore, TYY emphasizes that there is no place for racism and discrimination in higher education or anywhere else, and antisemitism and

Islamophobia must not be tolerated. Students have the right to a safe learning environment everywhere, and universities must particularly ensure the safety of students affected by the conflict. Therefore, TYY demands action to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and support for students and opposes university-level cooperation with Israel.
