November's Sustainable News

As the year draws to a close, it's time to take a look at the active year of TYY's environmental sector but also look to the future. In these news, we recap the year's sustainable development events, talk about recent advocacy work and advise on future opportunities to influence the environmental work of both TYY and UTU.

Our environmental guide will be updated in 2025
In addition to the environmental program that guides TYY's operations, we have created an environmental guide that guides our member communities in everyday environmental actions. Especially the people responsible for environmental issues of organizations should be alert and ready to influence the new guide from the beginning of the year! You can find the current guide (Finnish) here: https://www.tyy.fi/sites/default/files/2023-06/TYY%20ymparistoopas.pdf

A new environmental program was presented to the university
Saimi Herlevi, TYY´s board member responsible for environmental sector , presented TYY's new environmental program to the University´s sustainable development steering group. The students' hopes for the university's sustainability measures sparked a lot of thanks and interesting discussion.

The University of Turku has decided to prepare a new environmental program to guide its own activities. Preparation is now underway and students get to participate to the discussion about the program at the start of the year.

Last year's events on campus
Many interesting events related to sustainable development were organized on campus during the year. TYY's environmental sector was responsible for part of the organization, and part of TYY participated in the arrangements, for example in the form of communication. One of the most important environmental events of spring is the SiistiVappu event organized by TYY's wing, the idea of which is to celebrate the May Day in a sustainable manner. In addition to the SiistiVappu campaign, during the spring TYY organized a movie night together with Eetti Ry. In May, the university organized a joint campus cleaning day, in which TYY was also involved.

Several flea market-themed events were organized in the fall, such as KY-KeKe's Vujukirppis. In addition, Kirppisappro in October gathered a lot of participants to tour Turku's flea markets. In addition to these, the campus organized a week of sustainable eating, a Fair Trade panel discussion, and an environmental film screening where the film Jälkeemme vedenpaisumus was shown.

The year of the environmental sector has been busy and rewarding, and Vilma and Saimi from the sector thank everyone who participated for an inspiring year.
