Stricter disciplinary action for student misconduct

Published on the university intranet on March 19.

The University is tightening up the disciplinary action for student misconduct: in principle, purposeful misconduct will always result in temporary suspension from the University in the future.

Ethical principles are one of the core values of the University of Turku, which must also be reflected in the University's everyday activities. The study attainments must be completed honestly so that the student gives a correct impression of their competence.

“Completing study attainments through misconduct is unethical and does not indicate the student's actual competence. As this is the University's core value and at the heart of our educational objectives, the University will be more stricter in addressing students' purposeful misconduct," says Director of Educational Affairs Petri Sjöblom.

If a student conducts purposeful fraudulent action, they will in principle be suspended temporarily from the University in accordance with the Universities Act.

Purposeful misconduct includes, for example, planned cheating in an exam, taking an exam for someone else, plagiarism and autoplagiarism, presenting an answer or other writing drafted by someone else (including AI) as your own without referencing it in part or in full, and collaborating in a way that contravenes instructions. This is not an exhaustive list and misconduct will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

The new policy for disciplinary action described above will enter into force on 1 August 2025 and students will be informed about it through various channels. Teachers will also receive further instructions from their faculties during the spring.
