The student council has approved the updated environmental program for TYY at its September meeting. TYY's environmental program is updated every four years, and the next update will be done in 2028 at the latest. In this round of updates, major changes were made to the program's structure and titles, and themes such as reducing emissions to the archipelago sea were added.
TYY's environmental program focuses on two major themes - Sustainable TYY and TYY as a climate and environmental influencer. Under these themes, the program brings together how TYY can develop its own operations, in which matters TYY encourages organizations to work better and how TYY affects the surrounding society.
New themes have been added to the environmental program, such as calculating the carbon footprint and canceling emissions. The representative body decided that TYY calculates its carbon footprint every four years. The purpose of the calculation is to collect information that makes it possible to search for emission reduction targets in TYY's own operations and to use the information to support decision-making. The possibility of canceling emissions, for example regarding flights, was also added to the program. It is therefore possible for TYY to reverse the effects of the emissions it causes in the future, at its discretion. Overall, ambitions for climate and environmental goals were also added to the program.
The Archipelago Sea and its protection, which is important to TYY, was also added to the program as a new theme. In the past, the protection of the Archipelago Sea has been brought up in, among other things, election themes and various events, such as garbage drives, and now it is also reflected in the environmental program. The protection of the Archipelago Sea is an important theme in TYY's climate and environmental impact.
Now that the update of the program has been completed, it is next time to update the environmental guide for organizations. This update will take place during the next year and it is intended to involve organizations in, for example, environmental councils. The program is currently being translated into English and will be added here once the translation is complete.
